If you are interested in becoming a foster care provider and have reviewed the content on the What to Expect page, it is now time to learn more. Below is a list of the basic requirements and recommendations related to the Scott County Minnesota Foster Care program.

Foster Care Provider Requirements
- Live in Scott County Minnesota
- Live in a house or apartment which has at least two bedrooms and meet fire safety codes
- Be at least 21 years old for Child Foster Care, 18 years old for Adult Foster Care
- Be single or a couple
- Have enough income to meet your own family's needs
- Have experience as a caregiver, or be willing to learn if you don't have experience
- Not use corporal punishment
- All household family members welcome having a child in the home and support the licensing process
- All household family members support the licensing process
- Agree to keep all information shared confidential
- Participate in a series of home visits to complete the home study
- Attend required training
- Complete the application materials:
- Permission for a social service and court records review
- Submit to a fingerprint check for all household members age 18 and over
- Allow for a standard background study for all youth in your home over age 13
- Provide 3 personal references
- Submit a statement regarding the physical health of all household members
- Complete a health statement for all adults in the household
- Be 1 year from a major life change such as a marriage, divorce, birth of a first child, or a significant loss
- Be 2 years from chemical dependency treatment
- Demonstrate financial and emotional stability, responsibility and a willingness to work closely with the agency
- Have reliable transportation to transport children to appointments several times a week
